It’s 3:22 a.m., and I’m sitting here realizing it’s time.
Time to move on. Time to level up. Time to spread my wings a bit and get out of my comfort zone.
I am officially pushing back the launch of The Recursive Man (previously targeted for a July 16, 2026 “frozen version” release). Whatever date appears on Amazon may not be final. This is not because the book needs fixing or because I’m afraid to release it as-is. The manuscript is strong—recursive in structure to mirror lived grief, memory, and mental processes, blending personal essay, metafiction, and themes of preservation vs. participation, the White Room as sanctuary/cage, the Ollie symbol, and Fulcrum & Axis philosophy. Influences echo DFW, Knausgård, and House of Leaves, with transparent AI collaboration noted in the front matter.12
Instead, I’ve decided to shop it to hybrid publishers. I already have three hybrid publishers interested. This gives me the freedom to keep building this interconnected world the way I believe it should be built—across The Recursive Man, Mortal Errors, Blackwater Key, Bootlicker, and the “Fragments of a Life” memoir trilogy—while gaining professional support for distribution, marketing, and production that I’ve historically avoided.
Key Details of This Hybrid Approach
- Author Investment: Yes, this involves paying the publisher (a not-insignificant amount). It’s a gamble, but one I’m willing to make for aligned partners who understand the work.
- Rights & Control: I retain most rights and profits. This preserves ownership of the connected Fulcrum & Axis universe—something I’ve prioritized to avoid the rights issues seen with authors like Stephen King.
- Not Traditional Publishing: I’m not pursuing the traditional query route right now. I want to own my work fully. Traditional publishing often doesn’t align with open AI-assisted drafting/editing or my independent path. I respect the industry and may pursue it someday on my terms, but not as a newcomer hoping to get picked.
Why now? I haven’t sold many copies—largely because I dislike the brutal self-promotion side (researching agents, crafting queries for a complex long-term strategy). Put me in front of a microphone or keyboard with writing time, and I thrive. I need help with marketing, publicity, and reaching readers who will engage with this ambitious, vulnerable work. These hybrid partners seem genuinely interested in championing the book’s emotional authenticity, recursion, and philosophical depth.
None of this is guaranteed. It may go nowhere. But after years of mostly working alone, I’m excited to collaborate more while leading the vision.
The Book & Broader Vision
The Recursive Man processes real experiences—brother’s death, cancer, bipolar, adoption trauma, addiction, failed relationships—through recursive narrative that reflects life’s loops. It moves toward ordinary participation and “love is maintenance.” Readers get an Author’s Note on the “frozen” concept and AI role for full transparency.11
This fits into my larger canon. Parallel projects (Mortal Errors ~7.8/10 metaphysical fantasy; Blackwater Key Southern Gothic; etc.) continue under Fulcrum & Axis. I’m open to imperfect advance copies/PDFs/ebooks for early readers and feedback.
Next Steps & Opportunities
- For Readers/Supporters: Reach out if you were excited for the original launch. Imperfect copies available now.
- For Publishers/Partners: This is an invitation to discuss how we can amplify this work ethically and effectively. Emphasis on reader trust (honest covers/art over misleading AI gen), niche literary positioning, ARCs, events (virtual/hybrid in Greenville, SC), and sustainable marketing.
- My Role: Writing, editing, and vision. Yours: production polish, distribution, and promotion muscle.
I’m aware of the risks and unknowns—I’m not a fan of them—but this work deserves to be read. I need the feedback. Thank you all for following this strange journey. I love you all.
